While fans flocked to Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, NC, this spring to witness golf’s finest compete on a course steeped in tradition and championship history, another kind of precision was at play behind the scenes… this one powered not by a swing, but by a circuit.

Since February, a six-person electrical team from R.J. Leeper Construction (Leeper) has been working quietly—but critically—on the PGA Championship, supporting temporary power infrastructure across every corner of the event.

Under the leadership of Rudy Sells, Electrical Division Manager at R.J. Leeper Construction, the team was hired by Aggreko, a global leader in event power and temperature control, to provide hands-on electrical support throughout the tournament. Their work continues through late June as they manage the complex teardown and disconnection process, which includes dismantling temporary systems, safely removing connections, and preparing the equipment to move on to its next event. As one crew member explained, “The championship might be over, but there’s still a lot of work to do—disconnecting everything, tearing it all down, and loading it up to go to the next one.”

The scope of their work was extensive, covering everything from grandstands, lighting towers, and video boards to temporary food tents, merchandise tents, vendor stalls, player facilities, and broadcast areas.

“We kind of work in the shadows,” one team member said with a grin. “But apparently, we keep the lights on.”

And keep them on, they did. With hundreds of thousands of spectators, athletes, staff, and media descending on the grounds over the course of the championship, the margin for error was razor-thin. Leeper’s team ensured safe, stable, and code-compliant electrical connections throughout the complex and will remain on-site to support final load-out and site restoration.

“It’s not glamorous,” Rudy joked. “No planning, no headlines—just a map and a job list. But that’s the job. You come in, wire it up, and make sure it works.”

This project also highlights the rapid growth of Leeper’s Electrical Division, launched in January 2023 as part of the company’s expansion into industrial construction services. The division specializes in comprehensive electrical solutions, ranging from complex wiring systems to advanced lighting installations, ensuring robust, reliable, and code-compliant infrastructure for a variety of projects. This in-house capability enables Leeper to maintain greater control over project timelines, quality, and cost, enhancing its ability to deliver high-quality, timely, and cost-effective solutions.

While the tournament unfolded in front of the cameras, Leeper’s electricians played a different kind of long game—one of preparation, reliability, and technical expertise. Their contribution may have gone unseen by most, but it was essential to the success of one of professional golf’s biggest weeks.
